Ideas for Formative Assessments:

I used to think… but now I know…

The muddiest point is … What is crystal clear is …

Agree/disagree or always, sometimes never statements (ex. Trig functions are continuous; a system of 2 equations has a solution that can be written as (x,y)

Agreement circles - stand in circle. If you agree with the statement, move in to form an inner circle. Discuss with your partner(s) on the outside to decide who’s right.

Sort example and nonexample cards

Concept cartoons - variation on multiple choice: show cartoon, or photo of 3 people saying what they think the answer is with brain bubble. Have them defend the person. (only on a few questions)

Have students list everything they know about a graph

Give example and nonexample

Parking lot

Fist to 5 (give specific examples of what each means)

Response cards on popsicle sticks (happy, sad face)

Four corners

Frayer model (word in middle, definition, characteristics, examples, nonexamples (can be non-linguistic)

Human scatterplot - set up left to right or front to back as a continuum of understanding; may add other direction to a second concept so that students are in specific quadrants

Have students brainstorm all the types of … (ex. triangles) - after sharing out and agreeing on what belongs; list characteristics of each

Learning agendas

Compare quantities from solutions of different problems (A>B)

Pass the problem

Have students attach a pic onto a google doc to represent how they feel about a concept

Have students generate higher level questions (give costa words to help)

Terminology Inventory - Create a list of terms, maybe in a table. Under each, give choices (a) I have no idea what this means (b) I have heard of this, but not sure what it means (c) I have some idea, but still kind of shaky (d) I have a clear idea of what this means and can describe it to someone else

Thinking logs: I was successful at… I’m confused about …, I stopped because…,

Turn and tell: tell your partner what ...means; what you’re confused about; how you’re going to …
